NWOR has been selling quality ring and pinion sets since 1984. We received our first shipments in 1984 and have sold them exclusively until late 1999. Richmond Gear is the leading manufacturer of professional quality, high-performance ring and pinion sets manufactured in the USA. When Richmond notified us that they could not compete with the cheap imports and were slowing production on Toyota gears, we loaded up our warehouse. We also brought in quality Antonio Maseri gears from Italy as a backup source and have had very good results. Richmond Gear is back in full production. They might cost a little more but you get what you pay for when you buy ring and pinions! All available Richmond Gear sets are noted in our price sheet: Example N62488-RG.

When larger than stock tires are installed it greatly affects your overall gear ratio at any speed. Engine RPM is greatly reduced and, consequently, both fuel economy and performance suffer greatly. Toyota trucks only produce below 2500 RPM in high gear, an average of 22-30 rear wheel horsepower on a chassis dyno. The engine was designed to cruise efficiently at 2900-3100 RPM for extended periods. Large tire and wheel combinations add unsprung weight to the vehicle. The correct gear ratio is essential to overcome the added weight and “overdrive” condition caused by larger diameter tires. Toyota 4cyl & V6 engines need to conserve every pound of torque available. The mechanical advantage of gear change cannot be overcome by adding horsepower.

Selection is based entirely upon what tire size (diameter only) you are running. For example, if your Toyota has 32” tires your power will be increased and fuel economy returned by changing to 4.88 ring and pinion. The benefits of installing the proper ratio ring and pinion are:

  • Increased power
  • Significant gains in fuel economy
  • And, of course, easy driveability on and off-road

V6 RING AND PINION SETS

All '88-'95 Toyota rear-equipped axle assemblies used in turbo and V6 trucks are equipped with a new design 8" ring an pinion set. The pinion gear is approximately 25% larger in diameter than previous 4 cylinder pinions. The larger diameter pinion gear is extremely durable and has virtually eliminated most gear failures. The V6 differential also utililzes much larger bearings throughout. NWOR has sold the new design V6 gears sets since the fall of 1992 and will not sell our customers 4 cylinder gear sets with a 1/4" shim under the pinion because it causes additional loading of the pinion gear and premature failure
