| Which system is
best? As with any facet of purchasing
4WD parts, there is no one item that is far and away
the best for all applications. John Hendricks, owner
of Northwest Off-Road Specialties, has over 35 years
of off-road driving experience, from
Southern Mexico to above the Arctic Circle, and
he offers his advice:
All differentials sold by NWOR feature heavy duty
cases that are up to twice the thickness of the stock
Toyota. These heavy duty differentials eliminate case
flexing which is the primary cause of gear breakage
with oversize tires. The following
differentials are full-time automatic traction devices
and do not require air, cables, solenoids, and numerous small parts or
hoses which will eventually fail-usually when you need
the differential the most. Under real off-road conditions
the less complex the product the more reliable it is! |

LOCKER |
The standard Toyota differential works great until
one wheel loses traction. When all the available torque
runs out through that weak link the vehicle is stranded
with a spinning wheel. Another familiar off-road situation
that will leave you stranded is the position encountered
on rutted roads. When one front wheel and the opposite
rear wheel drop into deep holes, causing the axle to
become crossed up, the upper wheels will spin helplessly
in the air.
The Detroit
Truetrac™ is
a worm-drive, torque proportioning differential which
makes it an ideal unit for front drive axle. The Truetrac
provides superior handling and
traction at high speeds,
even in heavy snow or icy conditions. The Truetrac
offers no resistance in the steering wheel because
of its smooth power transfer between the wheels!
The Detroit Softlocker™ is a
tough, dependable, automatic locking differential.
The new Softlocker features special
dampening in the
unit without a backlash feel and sound! Extremely durable
and helpful in downhill operation. |
AWARNING TO OUR VALUED CUSTOMERS! |
The “Lockrite”, or
LA Locker, utilizes
the stock Toyota case and replaces the stock
spider gears using the original shaft. The Lockrite
kit has stronger than stock internal
locking gears and can cause rapid case wear, loose
shafts and premature failure of your stock case. The
Lockrite, we feel, should be installed in new stock
cases only. Due
to the above problems we do not offer the kit in
our catalog.
